Rounding
3.NBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Notes
My Favorite Strategy
1.
Underline the place that you are rounding to:
Ex: Round to the nearest hundred—
6
97
2. Circle the digit “right” next door to it because it is always “right” about rounding.
Ex: Round to the nearest hundred-
6
97
3. Focus on the number in the circle and sing the song:
If the number’s 1,2,3,4
Round it down right through the floor.
If the number’s 5,6,7,8,9
Round it up it’ll be just fine!
4. If the number is 1,2,3,4, place a “round down arrow” pointing to the number that stays
the same.
6
27
5. If the number is 5,6,7,8,9, place an arrow pointing up on the number that goes up!
6
97
6. The circle reminds you to turn it and everything else to a zero.
6
97= 700
6
27= 600
More Examples:
5
79= 600
2
48= 200
3
5= 40
4
2= 40
